Rotary Aviation Careers Expo (RACE)

The Rotary Club of Tamworth West is again conducting a Rotary Aviation Careers Expo (RACE) aimed at school students in Years 9-11 commencing at 4:00pm on Sunday, 31 May and concluding at 2:00pm on Tuesday, 2 June 2015. The Expo will cover a wide range of the careers that are available in the aviation industry. There will not be any flying, and we will not cover cabin crew careers.
The venue, Tamworth Regional Airport, is an ideal venue for this program as it is the base for many of the available aviation industries that will be visited. We aim to provide to the participants with a thorough exposure to the careers in aviation related fields by showing them working activities.
The students will have “hands-on” site visits to the following businesses: BAE Systems Flight Training; QantasLink Heavy Maintenance (Dash 8 overhaul); Sigma Aerospace (Engine and light to medium aircraft maintenance, including instrument overhaul); Air Services Australia (air traffic control) and Aviskills – the base for TAFE Aeroskills and aircraft maintenance training. Additionally, students will see presentations from Australian Defence Force (Basic flying training, plus aviation careers in the three arms of the ADF); a civilian helicopter pilot, long-haul international pilot and other aviation associated careers.
Careers Network Inc. acts as our high school liaison. They will be distributing information on this Expo directly to Careers Advisors at many, but not all, High Schools within District 9650. This assists us in exposing the program to all who may be interested. We suggest that Clubs also contact Careers Advisors at their local schools directly to ensure that they and their students are aware of this program.
The accommodation and meals will be supplied by BAE Systems. The accommodation will be motel style single rooms with private facilities. Meals will be self service buffet style in the BAE cafeteria. These are superb facilities and we will also have the use of their lecture rooms.
Activities will be fully supervised by the Rotarians of the Rotary Club of Tamworth West, and supervisors will be resident in the accommodation facilities. The Expo is a residential activity.
We are encouraging the District Rotary Clubs to become involved with this programme to seek out participants and if the need arises assist with the Expo Fee of $120 per student. Closing date is 15 May 2015 and available positions will be allocated on a “first come first filled” basis. It will be the student’s responsibility to make their own travel arrangements to and from Tamworth so perhaps Clubs could assist them in this regard.
