DonateLife Week 2nd-9th August 2015

Over 1100 Rotary Clubs across Australia are urging families to ‘have the chat’ about organ and tissue donation with their loved ones and register their donation decisions during DonateLife Week.

Rotary’s participation in DonateLife Week 2015 was prompted by the story of Jack Wilson, the grandson of one of the 21 Rotary District Governors in Australia. Jack was born with nephrotic syndrome, a congenital kidney disease which resulted in lengthy periods of hospitalisation.

DonateLife Press Release 2015-02-10

The 21 Rotary District Governor Elects across Australia have been meeting regularly over the last 18 months in Canberra, Parramatta, Wellington (NZ) and San Diego. Whilst in San Diego, we resolved to undertake a national campaign to support organ and tissue donations by promoting SaveLife Week from 2 August 2015 to 9 August 2015.

We have agreed to urge each of the more than 1100 Rotary clubs in Australia to issue a press release to their local newspaper and radio station during the week prior to 2 August 2015 with a request that this the given publicity during SaveLife Week. Where there is more than one club within the area of the local newspaper or radio station, the proposal is that the press release be modified to attribute the quotations in the press release to 2 or 3 club presidents, by arrangement between themselves.

Enclosed is the proposed press release (and a photo of the young child referred to) and below is the form of a draft email. I would be most grateful if you could make a careful note to action this during the week commencing 27 July 2015. If there is a need to consult with other local clubs for the issue of a joint release, you might please make those arrangements before that time.

Perhaps you could also ask if one of your club members would be prepared to contact the school principal at the school with which you are most closely associated and ask if he or she could address the students on this subject during SaveLife Week. There are a range of resources available at

Thank you for your support. Together we can make a real difference to much needed organ and tissue donations and at the same time highlight Rotary’s commitment to humanitarian service. As the press release notes, registered organ donors are truly a gift to the world.
