Barry spent most of his early life in the southern Riverina town of Albury. Following his education at the Albury Grammar School in 1962, he commenced his apprenticeship as a pastry cook. He then went into his own business and became a master pastry cook in 1966, at the age of nineteen years. After twenty two years in the pastry cooking industry, Barry became involved in the motel business for six years before his transition into the driver education field.

His first experience with Rotary was when he was inducted into the Rotary Club of Albury North in 1970. In 1991 Barry was welcomed into the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie West. After serving various positions on the club board, he was president in 1994-95. Barry has also served as;

Chairman of the District Conference Committee and chaired the Conference program in 1999;
Chairman District Changeover Committee and chaired the Changeover 1999
Assistant Governor 1999 – 2002.
District Foundation Committee - 1999-2000, 2002-03.

In November 2009, following his nomination as DGN, Barry accepted the role of acting assistant governor for cluster 3, for the last half of the Rotary year.

Over the past twenty years, Barry has been in the driver education industry. After completing his certificate IV in 2009, Barry became an accredited assessor of older drivers.

Barry is married to Bronwyn who is a retired secondary school teacher and counsellor. They have four adult children and eleven grandchildren. Barry and Bronwyn reside in Port Macquarie on the mid north coast of New South Wales.

Barry’s other interests include; Legacy, Masonic Lodge, Uniting Church, Reading and Walking.
