The Science Experience – updated details
18/07/09
The Science Experience is a national program that encourages students
in Years 9 and 10 to consider science, engineering and technology as
interesting and worthwhile subject and career choices.
The programs are essentially 3 days of hands-on science fun and
activities in laboratories, short interactive lectures in lecture
theatres from prominent scientists such as Dr Fiona Wood (2005
Australian of the Year) and the Sleekest Geek himself, Dr Karl
Kruszelnicki and most programs include a visit to a local
research/industry site. Each program provides information on possible
careers and future study opportunities.
Almost 3,000 places are available and conducted in approximately 36
university campuses and tertiary institutions throughout Australia
each year.
The Science Experience has received in the past, generous financial
sponsorship from Siemens Ltd when it was known as The Siemens Science
Experience. The program continues to have the support and
encouragement from Siemens and also, from the national and state
science teachers associations, the Young Scientists of Australia and
the participating universities and tertiary institutions.

Membership a key
Focus for Rotary in District 9650 20-05-09
Neville Parsons District Governor for Rotary District 9650 in
2009-2010 has highlighted the need for all Rotary Clubs within this
Rotary District to focus on the membership challenge to ensure that
Rotary continues to thrive in this District.
Speaking at a membership forum at Walcha on Saturday 16 May Neville
Parsons stated that the need for Rotary Clubs within our communities
is as great if not greater than ever before as a result of the need
for local communities to provide enhancements and the things that make
life within our communities that much better.
Neville also reminded all present that Rotary was founded in 1905 by
Paul Harris, a lawyer in Chicago who saw the need to provide an
opportunity for business and professional people to gather and enjoy
the opportunity to relax and grow from the experiences of each other.
Out of this focus on relaxation and fun and a different perspective
from the day to day grind of the normal work the group developed the
notion of community service in making their community a better place
to live.
This is the capability of each and every Rotarian today as the Rotary
Club is an opportunity to meet people from outside the normal day to
day contacts and together to deliver a better community through a
focus on community needs and expectations.
The membership challenge across the 55 Clubs in this Rotary District
is one of aging members and declining numbers and as a result the
attendees were challenged to go back to the origins of the concept of
Rotary and to refocus on the structuring of each and every Club to be
responsive to society today and at the same time to provide an
opportunity for members of the community to gather, have fun and
experience the benefit of sharing experiences with each other and at
the same time work together to enhance the quality of life in our
individual communities, this Rotary District, Australia and indeed
throughout the world.
That is the opportunity that is given to each and every Rotarian.
The Rotary District known as District 9650 has 55 Clubs from Lightning
Ridge and Coonabarrabran in the west to Woolgoolga and Forster in the
east and the current club members total 1624 as at 31 March 2009 and
increase of 18 since 1 July 2008.
The average club membership size is 29.5 members and the smallest
membership is 9 and the largest is 74.
District Governor elect Neville parsons has set a Goal for membership
in the 2009-2010 Rotary year of increasing the membership by 95 being
based on the net increase in membership of at least 1 member in each
of the 55 Clubs and also through the creation of 2 new Rotary Clubs
within the District that will deliver at least another 40 new members
in the 2009-2010 year.
This is seen as fundamental to provide for the Future of rotary in our
District and to enable the good works of Rotary to continue in each of
our communities into the future. ooOOoo
