PROJECT Tafea - Project No 19/07-08 formerly124/2004
VANUATU

Sponsored/Managed by District 9650 Issue Date: 19 JUN 2009

Introduction. In 2004, the Island of Tanna, Vanuatu was devastated by cyclones and ER RAWCS Volunteers undertook emergency repairs to the Lenakel Hospital. Following these repairs, D9650 RAWCS established a project to improve the much needed wellbeing of the people of Tafea Province by providing ongoing assistance in Health, Education and Community Infrastructure.

The Project. The project brings to bear the various aspects of RAWCS; Rotarians Against Malaria (RAM), Safe Water Saves Lives (SWSL), Donations in Kind (DIK), Pacific Training Aid (PTA) and facility assets through Project Volunteer Teams under FAIM. Initially, concentration had been on the Hospital and other Rural Health facilities, now it has been expanded to include other aspects of the project for schools and village infrastructure. Strong emphasis is placed on training the local population so that long term sustainability is ensured.

Current Status. During 2004-07 there have been 25 FAIM teams visit Tanna Island and undertaken repairs & refurbishment of Lenakel Hospital, staff houses, Rural Health Clinics and Education Assets. PTA activities include practical training for the students of the Rural Technical Colleges. ‘Kits for Kids’ educational resource packages continue to be assembled and despatched. ‘Adopt a School’ trial program is underway. Detailed planning for 2009 is progressing for up to 10 teams to continue the work.

Team Requirements. D9650 FAIM Chairman is seeking Club and Individual Volunteers to join in this great RAWCS Project. Non-Rotarians can also be team members and clubs may consider sponsoring apprentices or tradespeople as team members. Team visit is normally for up to two weeks. Teams will be required from about April thru all of 2009. Ongoing team skills required include, but not restricted to – carpenters, plumbers, roofers, electricians, painters and handypersons. Women are most welcome on the teams. All teams work with and give practical training to the local technical school students. Rotary insurance is provided for all team members.

Accommodation. There are several levels of accommodation and our teams stay at Leneai Palms Resort operated by two ex-pat Oberon Rotarians, which is of quite a high standard and provides excellent food and transport for teams. If teams are working away from the main Lenakel basin may be accommodated in local villages.

Costs & Timing. Volunteer cost for overseas travel, accommodation and meals is approx $2700 (tax deductible) ex Sydney/Brisbane. Local airfares are extra. Firm costs will be set when team numbers, airfares and accommodation details confirmed. Participating clubs are asked to fundraise and help finance the cost of project materials with a donation to the project of $1,000 (more is acceptable). Your local individuals and businesses may also make a donation and will receive a Tax Deductible Receipt. For more detailed information contact the Chairman below.
